Pain Management

Pain Medication Review
Medications can be effective in reducing chronic pain, but careful management and continuous optimization are essential for maximizing relief while minimizing side effects. Dr. Ho will assist with managing your pain medications, including anti-neuropathic agents, opioids with risk management strategies, muscle relaxants, and other relevant pain treatments.

Multidisciplinary Pain Management Day Program
Welcome to our Outpatient Pain Management Program at Royal Rehab Petersham.
Our comprehensive program is designed to support individuals experiencing chronic pain by combining evidence-based medical treatments with rehabilitation strategies tailored to each patient's unique needs. Led by Dr. Tim Ho, a specialist in pain management and rehabilitation, our program offers a multidisciplinary approach that includes personalized pain interventions, physical therapy, and medication reviews.
Our goal is to empower patients with the tools and strategies they need to regain function, improve quality of life, and manage pain more effectively.

Radiofrequency (RF) and Pulsed Radiofrequency (PRF)
Radiofrequency (RF) and Pulsed Radiofrequency (PRF) are minimally invasive treatments for chronic pain. RF uses controlled heat to deactivate specific nerves, interrupting pain signals and offering long-term relief, often for conditions like arthritis or spinal pain. PRF, a gentler technique, delivers brief electrical pulses to reduce pain without causing nerve damage, making it ideal for more sensitive areas.

Both procedures are outpatient treatments that can significantly reduce pain and improve function, with minimal recovery time. They are commonly used when other treatments have not provided sufficient relief, offering a non-surgical option for pain management.

However, results may vary, and some patients might experience temporary discomfort at the treatment site. While RF tends to provide longer relief, PRF may be safer for sensitive areas.

Steroid Injection
Steroid (corticosteroid) injections reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve mobility, commonly treating conditions like shoulder pain, back pain, bursitis, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, sacroiliac joint pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. These injections can enhance recovery by supporting treatments like physiotherapy. However, they are not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, individuals with infections, recent vaccinations, or those with liver, kidney, diabetes, epilepsy, or high blood pressure.

Specialized injections, or blocks, target specific joints or nerves. Joint blocks diagnose and treat pain in areas like the spine, hip, and shoulder, while nerve blocks relieve nerve-related pain by reducing inflammation and blocking pain signals.

PRP Injection
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections use your body's own healing properties to treat pain and inflammation. PRP is derived from your blood, concentrated with growth factors, and injected into the affected area to promote tissue repair. It is commonly used for joint pain, tendinitis, and soft tissue injuries. PRP offers a natural, regenerative approach to pain management, enhancing recovery and reducing the need for medications or surgery.

Spinal Cord Stimulation
Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a minimally invasive treatment that delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord, blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. It is often recommended for chronic pain conditions like failed back surgery syndrome, nerve pain, or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

The procedure involves implanting a small device under the skin, which is controlled by the patient to adjust stimulation levels based on their pain relief needs. SCS has been shown to significantly reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance quality of life, especially for those who have not found relief through other treatments.

At our clinic, we offer comprehensive assessments to determine if spinal cord stimulation is the right option for you, along with personalized care and ongoing support throughout the treatment process.
